Elizabethtown-Lewis Central School – 7th and 8th Grades

Off the Page: Petey

Students in 7th and 8th grades work with teaching artist and Education Coordinator, Lindsay Pontius of the Adirondack History Center Museum, to explore a novel about people with disabilities and put it into a local context. Students interpret and analyze a variety of sources around disability, journal about issues of multiculturalism in their own lives, and meet individuals involved with Mountain Lake Services. Students also develop poetry and give a poetry performance at the museum as a culminating activity, inviting the surrounding community to the event. Standards in ELA, Social Studies, the Arts and Career Development and Occupational Studies will be addressed.

Keene Central School – Grades 10-12

Historical and Modern Connections to Jewish and Russian Folk Dance Traditions of Tsarist Russia

Students in grades 10-12 work with teaching artist and dancer, Cordelia Sand to study the history of the Jewish diaspora from biblical times to the present as referenced in Davidic and Russian folk dances. Students will also create dances reflecting the history of their own families’ immigration to America. The project addresses Standards in Social Studies, ELA and the Arts, and culminates in presentations within the school to other students and in presentations for the Keene Valley community.

Keeseville Elementary School – 3rd Grade

Women of the Past: Extraordinary in the Ordinary

3rd Graders work with teaching artist and Education Coordinator, Lindsay Pontius of the Adirondack History Museum to explore the life of poet Jeanne Robert Foster, a woman of the past who lived locally but whose life had national and international significance. Students explore the art of Picasso and fashions/trends that Foster was exposed to in Europe, juxtapose them with the landscape from which she came and was so passionate about, and develop a multi-media theatre production to be performed at the school and the Ausable Valley District Arts Festival. Standards addressed include ELA, Social Studies and the Arts.

Minerva Central School – 4th Grade

Dan Berggren – Adirondack Folk Singer and Songwriter
History Marches On

4th Grade students and teachers, with the help from the 5th grade, work with singer and songwriter, Dan Berggren, to explore state and local history, and to write two songs about the area. The project culminates in an evening program for parents and community members involving student skits, a performance of the two original songs and a brief concert by Dan, a Minerva native. Standards addressed include ELA, Social Studies and Music.

Moriah Central School – 5th Grade

Living Off the Land: The Miner’s Son

Students in 5th grade work with teaching artist and Education Coordinator, Lindsay Pontius of the Adirondack History Center Museum to write, rehearse and perform a play about the history of mining in the students’ home town of Port Henry. Using ELA and Social Studies Standards students use primary documents, artifacts and photographs from the museum’s extensive collection and make connections to Moriah’s legacy from the immigrant families that came to mine in the 19th and 20th centuries. The diary of a young son of a miner as a primary document serves as a guide for the project, and students visit both the Iron Center in Port Henry and the Adirondack History Center Museum in Elizabethtown.

Northeastern Clinton Central School – 9th, 10th Grades

From Page to Play

In year three of the partnership between NCCS and Bob Pettee, 9th and 10th Grade English students discover what it takes to move an artistic work from the “page to the play.” Using the Learning Standards involved in ELA and the Arts, students explore the elements involved in a production, including script development from a previously published work, staging and acting out the script, technical mechanics for putting on a play, etc. The final project culminates in a theatrical performance of a play by the students, created from a literary work such as a novel or short story and presented with assistance from the Drama Club, Art students and English Department.

Peru Intermediate School – 5th Grades

Walking with the Ancients

Peru Intermediate 5th grade and Speech Language students work with teaching artist Bucky Seiden to explore the geography, history and mythology in connection with the ancient cultures of the Western hemisphere. Students create a variety of concrete representations of mythological figures and icons of the various cultures. A series of concrete stepping stones designed and created by students will guide visitors through the countries represented and studied – students and visitors alike will be able to “walk with the ancients.” Standards addressed include ELA, MST, Social Studies and the Arts.

Saranac Lake Middle School – 8th Grade

Freedom Then, Freedom Now

Students in 8th Grade work with re-enactor Cliff Oliver Mealy and teaching artists Don and Vivian Papson, founders of the North Country Underground Railroad Historical Association, to develop an exhibition on freedom incorporating elements of photography and theatre. Addressing Standards in ELA, Social Studies and the Arts, students learn about John Thomas, a fugitive slave and Gerrit Smith land-grantee that became a successful farmer and contributing citizen of Franklin County. Using primary source material, students work with teachers and teaching artists to discover the importance of freedom for all people.

St. Mary’s School – 8th Grades
Ticonderoga Central School District
Lisa Adamson, Painter and Rich Strum, Director of Education at Fort Ticonderoga
Celebrating the French and Indian War

Students in 8th grade work with teaching artist, Lisa Adamson, on a project involving the creation of a large-scale painting and original piece of historical fiction based on the French and Indian War. The project culminates in a student presentation at Fort Ticonderoga in conjunction with the 250th anniversary celebration of the French and Indian War in July 2008. With assistance by Rich Strum of Fort Ticonderoga, the project is collaborative effort with the ELA and Social Studies teachers at St. Mary’s School.
