Many Faces, Many Places: Exploring Unity

Special Education students in grades K-5 will work with teaching artist, Bucky Seiden to explore the concepts of unity, connection, collaboration and acceptance within their own families, school, community and within other cultures. To exemplify the concept of unity in concrete form, each classroom will create a ceramic tile mosaic on a moveable panel which will first be displayed at the May Art Show and then on permanent display in the school. Standards addressed include the Arts, Social Studies, ELA and MST.






Johnsburg Central School - 7th Grade                       $1500

Blossoming - Coming of Age Still Life Paintings

Seventh grade students work with local visual artist, Kate Hartley, to explore the concept of creating meaningful still life artworks to be featured in a month-long exhibit at the town library. Incorporating Standards in the Arts, Science and ELA, students will consider the history of the art-form, create paintings and will choose a "vessel" to represent their childhood and Adirondack plant that symbolizes their hopes for future growth.








Lake Placid Elementary School - 4th Grade                $1750

Shakespeare's THE TEMPEST and Civic Engagement

4th graders and scriptsStudents in 4th grade work with local theatre artist, Lindsay Pontius, to explore themes of slavery, freedom, leadership and stewardship through The Tempest by William Shakespeare. Students will learn about civic responsibility, human rights and the system of checks and balances as they explore the characters and situations in the play. Culminating activities include a visit to the County Courthouse in Elizabethtown and an abridged performance of The Tempest for the school community. Standards Addressed include the Arts, Social Studies and ELA.

Teaching Citizenship and Public Service through Artistic Collaboration
Frog and Toad Program

Students in K-12 work in collaboration with adult developmentally disabled clients to create a production of the musical A Year with Frog and Toad. Through the process, students become aware of differences, learn about better citizenship and the value of community service. Culminating activities include performances of the musical at the school. Standards addressed include the Arts, ELA, Social Studies, Language other than English and Health, Physical Education, and Family and Consumer Sciences.






Northern Adirondack Central School - Grades 9th-12th $1110

9th-12th grade Art and Chemistry students work with local clay artist, Sue Young, to explore symbolism, sculpture, Raku clay and an overarching theme of self empowerment. Using Standards in the Arts, ELA and Science, students will build clay totems embossed with symbols and topped with figurative sculptures celebrating their lives and achievements. The totems will be unveiled during the annual Music and Arts festival in May and will be a part a permanent sculpture exhibit at the school.

Art in the Basement: Designing an Art Space for Present and Future Generations

Students in grades 5-8 work with local architect and designer, Joe Vilardo, to help envision and design a working art space in the basement of the Parish church.  Using Standards in the Arts and Math students will measure and map the space, create blueprints and design perspective pieces of the furniture and room for possible future uses. Students will also document the process and will display their designs and photographic documentation as well as demonstrate techniques they have learned at a culminating Open House in Spring 2010.

Patterns in Nature

Photography and Science students in grades 10-12 will work with local naturalist and artist, Elizabeth Lee, to discover and present patterns in nature that occur in the Adirondack environment. Students will identify and photograph patterns, explore the relevance of patterns to artistic design, scientific concepts and local landscapes and will display their findings in a photography exhibit during the annual Art Show. Standards in the Arts, ELA, MST and CDOS are addressed.
